Prof. Fang Deliveried Keynote Speech in Euspen SIG: Structured & Freeform Surfaces

Euspen SIG: Structured & Freeform Surfaces conference was held in Paris on the 27th-29th November 2018. Professor Fengzhou Fang from the UCD Centre of Micro/Nano Manufacturing Technology (MNMT-Dublin) was invited to deliver a keynote speech entitled “Ultra-precision Manufacturing of Structured & Freeform Surfaces and Manufacturing III”. The development of design, process, and measurement in freeform optics were discussed in the keynote. Typical applications in optical imaging, VR/AR, visual optics, and bio-medical areas were presented.

There have been three phases in the history of manufacturing development. Manufacturing III represents the Atomic and Close-to-atomic Scale Manufacturing (ACSM), which was proposed by Professor Fang in 2013 and presented in an invited seminar in 2014. ACSM includes all steps necessary to convert raw materials, components, or parts into designed products that meet user's specifications. The processes involved in ACSM not only have a precision in atomic level, but also remove, add, or transform the work material in atomic and close-to-atomic scale. ACSM will provide a fundamental competence for the production of the fourth generation of core elements in contemporary industrialization.
