Haoyang Zhang from MNMT-Dublin wins the Special Prize of Moldex3D Global Innovation Talent Award 2018

The award ceremony for Moldex3D Global Innovation Talent Award 2018 was held in Shanghai on June 18th, 2019. The student category has seven winners in total. Haoyang Zhang, MNMT-Dublin PhD student, wins the Special Prize with the project ‘Using Moldex3D to Design Microfluidic Features’.

The filling behaviour of polymer melt in micro-sized cavities is complicated. Besides, actual injection moulding defects of some micro features cannot be predicted using simulation when using default and normal parameters. In order to solve the problem, this project integrates the real process conditions, actual machine responses and physical phenomena, including heat transfer coefficient, venting, wall slip and freezing temperature, into the analysis. Eventually, the filling of micro-sized features in a flow cytometer chip is predicted successfully, and the effectiveness of proposed manufacturing solutions, such as variotherm injection moulding, can be assessed readily and accurately.

This project has been reported by Moldex3D official website (, and posted by Moldex3D and Moldex3D Europe on LinkedIn and Facebook (, Relevant research ‘Precision replication of micro features using micro injection moulding: Process simulation and validation’ has been published in Materials & Design (

The Moldex3D Global Innovation Talent Award acclaims and acknowledges the most innovative projects that used Moldex3D to develop cost-effective solutions for plastics manufacturing challenges. According to Moldex3D, this year’s competition attracted entrants from more than 20 countries across the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific regions, whose projects represent a wide range of industries, including automotive, energy, medical, electronics, household appliances, furniture and mold making.
